Canada Day in Prince Rupert

Oh, Canada!

Canadian flag on Prince Rupert coastHere in Prince Rupert, we have a strong connection to our Canadian roots.

Although we’re all the way up in the corner of the country, our little city is a link to the world, both east and west.

The traditional lands of the North Coast Tsimshian peoples, the rugged rainforest meets the sea, here. It has been a plentiful, peaceful, and beautiful home to First Nations for generations, and a safe and majestic habitat to wild creatures and lush plant life for millennia. All of these are elements of the unique and enviable Canadian lifestyle we proudly enjoy.

Founded in 1910 as the Pacific terminus for the Grand Trunk Railway, the modern city of Prince Rupert has always been the western gateway to this beautiful country. And –thanks to a nationwide contest organized by the railroad company– we’re named for Prince Rupert of the Rhine, the first Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company. His adventurous spirit and foresight opened Canada up to global trade more than 400 years ago.

Adventurous spirit?

Global trade?

Awe-inspiring nature?

Rich cultural history?

Yeah, that sounds like Canada.

It sounds like Prince Rupert.

Come out and celebrate our True North heritage at the PR Canada Day celebrations.

The Crest Hotel is in the heart of the action, and it’s a great place to call home (even for just a little while)!

Every year, the Prince Rupert Special Events Society goes all out at Canada’s birthday bash! After 152 years as a nation, we’ve got plenty of reasons to throw a party.

This July 1st, don your finest red and white, and head to Pacific Mariners Memorial Park (just steps from the Crest) to take part in the fun. All events are free, and everyone is welcome!

The Canada Day Celebrations run from 12 – 4 on Monday, July 1st.

Enjoy a timeless town picnic on the green, with plenty of activities and entertainment for all ages.

Indulge a little bit of patriotic pride. Join local dignitaries as they raise the Canadian flag and speak about what our nation means to them. Support our community heroes with the Prince Rupert Civic Recognition Awards. Then, lend your voice to a moving round of O’ Canada (you can wave your own maple leaf banner, too!).

Get your toes tapping to live shows by talented local entertainers, including multicultural dance presentations and music that highlights our community’s varied heritage.

Test your knowledge with fun and interesting Canadian trivia for kids and adults (we are, after all, the birthplace of Trivial Pursuit…).

Taste our nation at the delectable ethnic food stalls. There’s so much flavour, here!
Traditional “summer fair” foods will be available, too! Popcorn, beaver tails, and cotton candy, anyone?

Prince Rupert Canada Day Child Face PaintIn the spirit of good, old-fashioned fun, there will be perennial favourites like contests & games, fun children’s races (you might want to brush up on your egg-and-spoon skills, kids!), face painting, and vendors’ stalls showcasing historical and contemporary Canadian stories.

Close out this exciting day with a fireworks display over the water at dusk! No matter how high-tech this world gets, there are few sights as simple and breathtaking as firecrackers on Canada Day. This year’s show will truly delight.

And, of course, let’s not forget the essential ingredient in any birthday party: the cake!

There will be cake.

Everyone is invited to enjoy a slice of Canada’s enormous 152nd birthday cake. (You might just have to help blow out the candles, though…)

Here at the Crest, we’re so proud to be a part of this incredible nation. We’ll be celebrating with our neighbours on Canada Day.

On behalf of our Crest family, we invite all of our guests and visitors to join us for the country’s best birthday party!
