How To Enjoy Winter Around Prince Rupert

BC Coastal rainforest in snow

BC’s North Coast is a mecca for outdoors enthusiasts!

Winter weather can be indecisive around here. Overcast and wet, sunny and cold, or with a hearty (but short-lived) amount of snow. The hills and trails around the city offer a great place to play, no matter what the skies look like! Indeed, the changing weather means that you can have a different invigorating experience every day.

Just make sure to grab the correct gear for your favourite outdoor pursuits, and you’ll be set.

Road bikers get an incredible thrill from the level, uncrowded streets and boardwalks that wind throughout Kaien Island. Even winter’s rain can’t stop a true cyclist (indeed, riding when it’s wet can be exhilarating)! A short ferry ride across to Haida Gwaii can lead to some really breathtaking cycling adventures, and the temperate climate makes road biking around Prince Rupert easy and accessible.

But this is BC, which means heaven for mountain bikers. Prince Rupert is no exception! Off-road biking along the Yellowhead Highway or across the surrounding hillsides is a favourite pastime for locals and visitors, alike. In the colder season, fat tires are a good idea –providing stability in the mud (and occasional snow), and taking some of the effort out of the uphill climb. Trail riders in the know like the challenging “Red Light District”, the Rainbow Summit toward Diana Lake, or cutting across the hills adjacent to the Ridley Island access road.

Despite our mild coastal temperatures, Prince Rupert is occasionally visited by the snow fairies. On days when our hillsides have some powdered sugar, locals love to strap on their snowshoes and head up the trails for a shimmering view over the bay and the valley. There are few things more peaceful than a white-capped, contemplative tour of BC’s awesome and ancient rainforests. Tona Lake Trail and Tall Tree Trail are favourites. Didn’t pack your snowshoes? Don’t worry, local outfitters have plenty of excellent trekking gear to rent, and also run professional guided tours to help you discover the most magnificent routes and awe-inspiring views.

Ready to get your heart pumping this winter? Prince Rupert Nordic skiers benefit from the excellent trails at Snow Valley Nordics, near Kitimat. The trail system and warming hut are run by a dedicated and knowledgeable team of volunteers. Prince Rupert ski club members enjoy special rates, but all cross-country skiers can explore the beautiful Onion Lake trails, and participate in lessons, races, and other fun and healthy outdoor activities.

Downhill Skiing

Just an hour and a half from Prince Rupert is Shames Mountain Ski Area. Recently named one of the 10 best ski hills in the world, this Northern BC secret gets more snow than any other North American ski hill (1200 cm each year!), and offers endless lift-served backcountry terrain and perfect champagne powder. Charley’s Lounge at the Crest is a great place to warm up after an invigorating day on the slopes.
