Roll into Rupert – An Iconic Canadian Train Ride

Getting to Prince Rupert is always an adventure.

Whether you drive in along the Yellowhead Highway, sail up the BC coast, or take a propeller plane into Kaien Island’s small-but-perfectly-formed airport, making your way here is part of the fun!

But there’s one iconic means of travel that is an experience in itself.

Via Rail’s Jasper-Prince Rupert train is a two-day trip that winds through some of Canada’s most breathtaking scenery. Make your visit to Prince Rupert a memorable one by booking a seat on this awe-inspiring journey.

It’s been almost 200 years since the first spike was driven into Canadian soil, and we’ve never looked back. Since the 1830s, the rails have moved people and goods across this nation (the last spike, connecting the east and west coasts in 1885, is commemorated by a plaque outside of Revelstoke, in the Shuswap). And while it’s no longer the most convenient form of transportation, travel by train still holds a romantic appeal. The “Rupert Rocket” follows the tracks of gold rushers, homesteaders, naturalists, and adventurers of every kind, who made their way west to find their fortunes.

The 1160 km route follows the storied Grand Trunk Pacific Railway along the beautiful Skeena River from the heart of the Canadian Rockies to the stunning BC coast. The two-day journey captures the natural and cultural history of the region. From unbeatable wildlife-spotting to magnificent landscapes to abandoned mining towns, travellers are surrounded by awe-inspiring sights.

In order to capitalize on the scenic vistas, the Jasper-Prince Rupert train is a “daylight-only” route, which means an overnight stop in Prince George. Take advantage of the quick taste of this vibrant BC mountain community (we recommend staying at the Pomeroy Inn & Suites, and grabbing a bite at North 54) before returning to the train in the morning.

Back on board, guests enjoy comfortable seats, large windows, and interesting highlights pointed out by the friendly staff. However, most people find themselves enchanted by the views from the glass-domed sightseeing cars (the Panoramic Dome car is exclusive to Touring Class ticket holders, but the Parc Dome is available to all passengers, October-May).

The train’s keen-eyed conductors will be sure to announce noteworthy historic sites and points-of-interest, as well as any picture-worthy (and there are so, so, so many!) moments, like rushing waterfalls, dramatic rock formations, or the numerous animals that make their habitats in BC’s ancient forests. Grizzly bears, eagles, elk, and more are common sights along the way. The iconic Rocky mountains, dense rainforests, glacial lakes, and towering canyon walls are all a part of this extraordinary trip.
